Avatars of War Pt. 3

I spent some time on Saturday finishing off my second model from Avatars of War. This model turned out better than the previous model. 

I spent a bit more time on his beard this time and I think it turned out well. 

Different light angle makes quite a difference. 

I enjoyed painting this model, however, I realized one of the main differences between GamesWorkshop models and Avatars models. There isn't as much focus on armor and metal on the Avatar models. 

Either way, both style of Dwarfs are great. 

Avatars of War Pt. 2

I quickly got to painting the new models I received from Avatars of War. I have been much too distracted with PC games lately and I have had an urge to paint. 

I decided to paint the Thunderer model first. 

The model's posture and weapons are absolutely fantastic. My only complaint about the model is that it is a bit too large. I will have an issue when trying to use this model with my other GW models since he likely won't rank up very well

I think I will end up creating some specific models to stand beside them with accommodating stances. 

I did mess up a bit on this guy. 

I didn't clean some of the excess metal off of some parts and I left a few nasty mould lines. Also, I messed up and forgot to glue the rifle's barrel and his cigar on before priming. Oops. 

You can certainly see the gap on the barrel in this picture. 

Overall, I am pretty pleased with how he turned out. It certainly isn't my best work, but it was fun to do and some more experience with metal figures for me. 

Avatars of War Pt. 1

I finally received my shipment from Avatars of War. I ordered the package nearly 6 weeks ago, so I was glad to finally get it. 

I ordered 3 hero type dwarfs. 

I actually didn't know that they were metal models when I ordered them. I am not overly fond of metal models when painting. After painting GW models for the past two months, I have become much more used to painting plastic. 

One mistake I made with these models is that I didn't clean them properly before priming them. This is an issue I've had before. 

Oh well. 

Grimm Burloksson

This is my latest model. He will be a fun addition to my Dwarf gun line! 

The initial model I did had a pure white pipe. 

But a friend recommended some changes. After doing a few touch ups, I had completely fucked up the pipe. I ended up scraping off the paint that I could and just went with silver. Fuck it. 

He looks more dwarfish this way, but part of me still wishes he had that crisp white pipe. 

Dwarf Runelord

I woke up early again today and tackled another dwarf model. 

Last night I cut and cleaned up the Runelord from the Dwarf battleline. 

I decided to not glue any of these pieces together before painting. 

A friend of my recommended doing a purple cloak, which turned out very well. 

I spent about 2.5-3 hours total on this model. I think it might be one of the best models I have ever painted. 

I recently ordered a few models from Avatar of War and was feeling a little worried that I wouldn't be able to paint them very well. But after painting this model, I feel confident that I will do a good job on them when they arrive. 

Dwarfs (Warriors and Thunderers)

I received a Dwarf battleline last week. It contains 59 models. Battle forces and big boxes of models have a tendency to discourage me from painting. This weekend, however, I decided to tackle the box. 

I started by assembling the 20 warriors. 

Tons and tons of bits. I also realized that if I were to put the arms on, that it would be nearly impossible to paint their faces. This added a bit more time to the job. 

I then decided to put together 20 thunderers as well. The intention was to get them primed all at once. 

Then the priming started. 

Messy stuff. 

But it didn't take too long with the airbrush. 

I then applied Leadbelcher and Dwarf Bronze to a few pieces. 

The next step was a brown wash. 

This was the end of night one. 

The next day I started with a silver dry brushing. 

This is where I had intended to paint them 5 or 10 at a time. 

But once I got started on their beards, I just couldn't help but continuing. 

After I painted on the beards and skin, I decided to glue them all up. 

The next step was getting to the fabric and details. 

After a bit more work on Sunday and Monday morning, this was the final result. 

It was a long long long weekend of painting, but I am pretty happy with the results. 

These models are definitely not as clean or detailed as some of my other dwarfs, but the fact that I got 40 done in one weekend makes me very happy. These are just core units, so I don't think I have to invest too much effort into them. 

My next project will be finishing off the battleline. 

Longbeards (first 10)

I continued to work on my dwarfs this week. I am quite determined to get up to about 1,500 points with them as many new players at the shop in Seoul have recently picked up WHF. It will be nice to learn with them. 

Since I am in Korea, it can be difficult to get miniatures. It is even more difficult to get Gamesworkshop miniatures because of their online retailer policies. 

I said that I wanted to be quite selective about which units I buy this time. However, that may not be possible. My choices are limited. However, I made another decision recently. I decided to use models as proxies. I never liked doing that in the past. Ideally, I would love to have a uniform platoon. Dwarfs, however, look so similar. Longbeards, warriors and ironbreakers are all pretty much the same. 

So, I decided to just make sure my front rank or two are the models I intend to use and the models behind them should just look somewhat similar. 

So even though I am not planning in using Longbeards, here are 10 Longbeards. 

They will most likely fill in spots behind warriors and ironbreakers. Or I may choose to use them in the future and have warriors fill in behind. Either way, these 10 are done and they will find some place in my army. 

I think they turned out well. They are very shiny and metallic. I have really been enjoying the use of metallics when painting.
